RUSTON SHUNTER

History

The shunter was built by Ruston & Hornsby for the ‘Ransomes’ factory in Ipswich in 1962, the engine number being 466629. It was later purchased by the North Norfolk Railway & was part of a bulk buy of stock & was not really needed, but was used on shunting duties and diesel galas. In 2007 it was purchased by the North Dorset Railway Trust & arrived at Shillingstone Station on 21st August 2007. It is the first Diesel loco at the station since 1967 when the demolition train went through for the last time. The loco has been repainted into the Prussian Blue livery of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway and has been used to assist with track laying and shunting stock.

Restoration

Following the repainting into Prussian blue livery the Ruston will undergo necessary maintenance over the winter period 2011/2012.

MARK ONE BSK COACH

History

Following the grant of £10,000 from the National Lottery ‘Awards for All’ scheme the vehicle was acquired from the Swanage Railway in early 2011 in order to provide suitable catering and venue space thus relieving pressure on the increasingly cramped main station building.

Restoration

The main effort during 2011 was to remove any quantities of asbestos found within the vehicle and to make it weather-tight before internal renovation can begin in 2012.

LMS BRAKE VAN

History

The vehicle, number DB950194, was built by British Railways to an LMS pattern in 1950 and was purchased by the Trust late in 2010 from a private individual based at the Swanage Railway. The vehicle was not brought to Shillingstone until 17 th October 2011 when sufficient track had been laid to accommodate it.

Restoration

A fast-track restoration is due to commence in December 2011 that will see a new roof, sides and flooring as the fitting of steam heating.

PETROL TANKER

History

The vehicle was brought to Shillingstone in early 2011 and is privately owned by the Southern Catering Group.

Restoration

It is hoped that some cosmetic restoration will be undertaken during 2012.

LNWR BOX VAN

History

The box van was donated to the Trust in 2009 by the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust based at Washford on the West Somerset Railway.

Restoration

The van will be fully restored as funding and manpower resources allow but it sits below the brake van and the coach in order of priority. It is hoped that some work will begin in 2012 but 2013 is a more likely forecast.
