Station Closure:
16th & 23rd May 2012
Please be aware that the Station will be closed on Wednesdays 16th & 23rd May 2012 while further renovation is carried out on the shop and café floors.
We are open as normal on every weekend but require sufficient time during the week for new floor surfaces to harden.
Our apologies for any disappointment this may cause but we think you’ll agree that the improvement will be worth it! |

As
heralded
previously
the
rebuilding
of the
long
lost
Down
Platform
Shelter
is one
of the
tasks
for
2012.
The wood
has been
bought
and, as
with the
Greenhouse,
the
carpentry
has
begun
off
site.
However,
before
it can
be
erected
at sunny
Shillingstone
the
brick
base and
the
platform
in the
immediate
area
needs to
be
rectified.

|
 |
Thanks to
stalwart
volunteer
John Drew,
that job is
well in hand
and we will
very soon
see the
shelter rise
again. |

Another busy and very enjoyable weekend for the Shillingstone Events Team!
This time the Trust's marquee found itself at the excellent Abbey Hill Steam Rally held at the Yeovil Showground. Despite the (typically) poor Bank Holiday weather the event was fully attended by traction engines, vintage vehicles and a plethora of other attractions.
A great season opener and well recommended for next year! Many thanks to Charlie Harris for not only organising the event but also for very kindly inviting Shillingstone to attend. |
|
Our event season continues with a very busy few weeks ahead of us starting with the Three Okefords Rally in Shillingstone village on the weekend of 19th & 20th May.
Watch this space for details of the Diamond Jubilee Vintage Day on Sunday 3rd June when a host of historic vehicles will be on display (and in action) at the Station.
Finally, we look forward to welcoming the Three Okefords and a convoy of traction engines (and other attractions) to our station on the weekend 30th June /1st July for our first Midsummer Steam Up which promises to be a very special event. |

Egg-Static
Start
To
The
Season
|
|

|
After all the excitement, extensive press coverage and prominent headlines the normal situation returned.
Yes, the clear skies and midsummer temperatures gave way to a week of grey skies and drizzle but this did not deter a number of families taking part in our first event of the season, the Shillie Bear Easter Egg hunt.
Hidden away amongst the ever changing station site were 20 questions (set by quizmaster and shop manager Derek Lester-Jones) that the youngsters had to answer and this year’s winner was Tommy Weeks of Sturminster Newton.
Well done to Tommy who left the Station with a giant Easter egg as first prize.
Our next event will be our stand at the Abbey Hill Steam Rally on the long 4-7 May Bank Holiday weekend which promises to be a cracking show (it always is).

Express
Arrives
At
Shillingstone
|
|
A lot has happened at Shillingstone recently, and a lot more is about to happen, and this is a great credit to all of our hard working volunteers.
However, it is no exaggeration to say that none of this would have been possible without the fantastic support we’ve received from Express Hire near Poole
over the last year.
Last weekend was no exception as we completed the lion’s share of the reorganisation of the northern end of the yard. This work has been our main effort for the past few weeks and despite not being very headline grabbing it has nonetheless been vital for our development.
The removal of tonnes of waste, movement of storage containers, relocation of sleepers, the installing of new volunteer messing accommodation means that we can now lay sidings to store and restore rolling stock away from the main station site. |
 |
|
| The fork lift on the Tele-handler and the bucket on the digger were in non-stop use as the team from Shillingstone and the Hengist group building the Clan Pacific 72010 mucked in together. The end result is a tidier, more useful site that will allow for some more exciting developments soon. |

Due to
an
extensive

we

both the

As you
might
expect
we have
made
much of
our
recent
infrastructure
progress
such as
the
signal
box and
track
but
equal
notice
should
be given
to the
garden
on the
Up
Platform.
Quietly
beavering
away our
intrepid
gardeners
– Derek
and
Beryl
– have
slowly
transformed
an area
of waste
ground
into a
fantastic
flower
garden. A
well
tended
garden
was
always a
feature
of
stations,
particularly
those in
the
country,
and
prizes
for the
best
examples
in
category
were
keenly
fought
over.
Notwithstanding
the
efforts
of those
pesky
rabbits
Shillingstone’s
has
been
steadily
developed
over the
last 3
years
but
there
was
always
something
missing;
the
greenhouse. That
is until
yesterday. As
with the
level
crossing
gates
the
greenhouse
was
fabricated
and
painted
off-site
so that
it could
be
quickly
and
easily
assembled
in
situ. Based
on
photographs
from the
1950s
the
structure
is a
close
approximation
of an
original
feature
and the
keener
eyed
among
you will
note
that it
is
painted
in the
authentic
‘bamboo’
shade
that
will
shortly
adorn
the rest
of the
station.
Thanks
to
‘Pete
the
Painter’
for
painstakingly
preparing
the site
and
brickwork
after
years of
neglect
and of
course
to Ken
Merriman
for all
the
carpentry. |
|
|
|
 |
Now if we
can just do
something
about those
pesky
rabbits! |
