Shillingstone Station Project

Shillingstone Station is situated on the north eastern edge of the village of Shillingstone. Although not listed, the building is recognised for its architectural and historic interest, and is included within the Shillingstone Conservation Area. Closed in 1966 after 103 years of continuous operation, the station became vacant around the turn of the century and its future looked uncertain. Its value and potential was recognised by a group of local enthusiasts who persuaded Dorset County Council that the building should be handed over to them to restore. After months of hard work by numerous volunteers, the North Dorset Railway Trust has restored the station building and partly re-laid the track bed adjacent to the platforms. A relatively new arrival has been the “Morning Star” locomotive which is also being restored for display at the station. Although only early days, the painstaking restoration of the station and its environs is a credit to all those involved.

LOCAL PEOPLE REWARDED FOR OUTSTANDING WORK IN THE COMMUNITY

Sportsmen, artists, volunteers and architects were among the local people from North Dorset who were rewarded for their outstanding contribution to their communities at the People & Places Awards held on Saturday 28 October.

Chairman of North Dorset District Council, Col Michael Oliver, made the presentations in front of an invited audience at the gala ceremony held at the Coade Hall, Bryanston School.

Welcoming everyone to the event, Col Oliver said: “All of the nominations are worthy of a prize, but of course, there can only be one winner.  Whether you are nominated, commended or indeed are a prize winner, I would like to salute you and recognise the outstanding commitment all of you have made to making North Dorset a better place to live.”

Youngest winners this year were the Under 13 Boys from Port Regis School who had an outstanding sporting year being unbeaten in rugby, football and cricket in the face of strong opposition.

Also taking home awards on the night were the North Dorset railway Trust for their sterling work in saving and restoring Shillingstone Railway Station.

Environmental awards were made to: Glenda Martin, for ceaseless campaigning to recycle printer cartridges, old mobile phones and foreign currency in aid of the charity Survival International; and to the Stour and Vale Hydro Group, based in Gillingham, which has encouraged mills on the River Stour to generate electricity for local use.

The Volunteer of the Year award was made to Pam Reynolds for her tireless work raising funds for the open air pool in Shaftesbury for the benefit of the whole community. In her spare time Pam is also a Town Councillor and Mayor of Shaftesbury.

Awards were also made to commercial ventures in the district that had made a contribution to their communities including: the True Lovers Knot pub at Tarrant Keyneston and the Udder Farm Shop in East Stour.

The People & Places Awards are sponsored by these local companies and organisations: Blackmore Vale Publishing, Citizens Advice Bureau, Environment Agency, Exclusive Contract Furniture, Hall & Woodhouse, Nazareth Lodge, North Dorset District Council, Olives et Al, Snibor, Western Design Architects, WJ Dike & Son, WISH and Your Choice.
